    First Generation

    William & Mary Spence

     

    The Spence Family landed in Nova Scotia from Scotland in 1811.

     

    William & Mary Spence lived in Lakeland, Hants County before purchasing the - as it became known - Spence Farm in Ellershouse / New Port Station.

     

    They had 6 children, with the oldest being Andrew (1803 - 1897)

    Second Generation

    Andrew & Margret Spence

     

    Andrew and Margret had 9 children and the first oldest male was Nathaniel born 1934.

     

    Nathaniel was a member of the NS legislature

    Third Generation

    Nathaniel & Mary Spence

     

    Nathaniel married Mary Cochrane and had 9 children.

     

    One was George Marshal Spence (June 9 1877- May 30 1958).

    Forth Generation

    George Spence

     

    George Spence farmed at the old Spence farm all of his life.

    Fifth Generation

    Norman & Ray Spence

     1911 Norman Spence (son of George) purchased the farm and land when George passed away. Norman, George (5th gen), Bruce (5th gen), and Rae (Norman's wife) formed the company Spence Managed Forest (SMF) in 1992.

     

    Norman Tremaine Spence was a Hereford breeder and lumberman in Newport Station. In 1963 he was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia representing Hants West and served until 1970. He also served as president of the Hants County Exhibition, director and Honour Roll member for the Canadian Hereford Association, and was an active member of the Nova Scotia and Canadian Association of Exhibitions. In his later years, his greatest pride was the family-managed forestry business near Ellershouse.

    Sixth Generation

    Bruce Spence (1943 - 2015)

    George Spence (1946 - 2022)

    Bruce played an active roll in the forest works and worked the land with his children for many years.

    Although George lived in Ontario he was an active participant in the Forestry and took over the roll of President on Bruce's passing.

    Not to be forgotten is Jim Bremner, third from the left, who has acted as forestry manager with Norman, then Bruce / George & now with this generation. Jim is intrical to our success.
